What was the most challenging part of her career?
The most challenging part of her career has been balancing her personal and professional life. Brown says she is dedicated to both, but admits it can be difficult to keep everything in check. “It’s hard because you have to have that balance and you have to know when it’s time for work and when it’s time for home,” Brown said. “And I think a lot of people don’t really understand that because they only see me as an athlete. And they think that my job is just playing basketball all the time and I don’t have any other job outside of basketball. But I do have a job and I do take care of myself off the court as well.”
Brown has had to juggle her schedule several times throughout her career, most notably when she was pregnant with her son Zion. She missed Game 4 of the 2016 Finals while pregnant and later missed the rest of the playoffs while she Recoverd from childbirth. Brown says she was able to rebound quickly by taking some time off after giving birth and then returning to training right away. She credits her son Zion for helping her stay motivated during tough times: “Zion always makes me realize how important this game is and how much work goes into it, so even if we lose or if things are tough, he always tells me like, ‘Mommy, it doesn’t matter because there’s going to be another game,’”

Tell us about your culinary background.
I was born and raised in upstate New York, where I developed an early interest in cooking at home. After college, I moved to Jerusalem to study food management at Beit Zvi University. While there, I worked as a line cook at some of Jerusalem’s top restaurants before opening my own kitchen in 2013. My focus is on contemporary Israeli cuisine with an emphasis on sustainability practices.
What inspired you to start your own restaurant?
I was inspired to open Judaea Brown because there weren’t any good contemporary Israeli restaurants in NYC when I moved here five years ago. Jerusalem is home to some of the world’s best chefs—it was only right that I bring their talents back to New York City! Plus, I wanted to create a place where diners could experience Israeli culture through my food—an idea that resonated with a lot of people who have visited my restaurant so far.
